Okay the time and space part was to attract your attention. Let’s talk dimensional letters.
I have to admit that I like 3D……well, not always at the movies, but I do like 3D signs. I think that objects representing a business like a tire for a tire shop, a shoe for a shoe store or a giant tape measure for a hardware store (like the one on Main Street in Simpsonville) are clever and attractive signs.
But if one can’t quite go that route, one can still get a three dimensional effect by using Dimensional Letters. As an ex-materials engineer, I appreciate that one can get the letters in just about any material and size and finish. Take a look at this sample batch below:
Some are solid metal (usually Aluminum), thermoformed plastic, metal over acrylic, metal over foam-core, foam-core, acrylic – heck, the only ones not in this photo are those of solid wood.
Dimensional letters give a sign a bit more of a punch by having letters that quite literally stand out from the flat plane of the signs structure. The letters can be painted, illuminated, curved, flat or some other surface texture. The letters can even be put on different planes or altered lines in order to activate the viewer’s curiosity – or even question what they see! The signs draw more attention as one views them from the side, and they can help keep a viewer interested as they come around to see the face of a sign and thereby giving the mental registration of the “brand” more time to take effect.
Depending upon the choice of materials, one can light them externally or internally. With LEDs, one can create a luminous shadow or halo around the letters to help them stand out, especially at night.
Dimensional letters can also be routed or blasted into signs as is evidenced by this image below:
As the above images show, the letters don’t necessarily have to be individually added to a sign but can be routed out of – or into – a sign substrate.
Logos can come alive by utilizing dimensional letters or techniques:
Mixing materials can have a pleasing effect also:
All in all, dimensional letters can bring that “pop” into an otherwise ordinary flat sign.
